ECU junior blind since childhood a star athlete, student, human being

When her son was just 7 years old, Verdina Gillette-Simms one evening contemplated the condition that would redefine his life.

Finally, she asked herself the question: “How do I tell this child he’s not going to be able to see anymore?”

Verdina understood his plight because she suffers from glaucoma, a disease that has left her legally blind.

Elexis Gillette grew up to be a silver medalist paralympian in the long jump at the 2004 Athens Paralympics.  Gellette recently stared in a European Levi ad campaign:

The posters show Gillette shirtless, wearing a pair of jeans. His hair, typically styled in cornrows, is combed high into an afro. His right eye, devastated and glassy from glaucoma, is startling. In the photo, the slogan reads “I feel like they look good.”

Unfortunately the ad has appeared in the US.
