Last year, after earning her law degree from the University of Denver, Lucas launched the coalition’s Center for Rights of Parents With Disabilities. The center provides legal representation to disabled parents. Some have experienced discrimination; others face the risk of losing children because of their disabilities.
The center is funded by a two- year fellowship from Washington- based Equal Justice Works and Miami-based Greenberg Traurig, which has a Denver office. Once the fellowship expires in 2007, Lucas will need to find new sources of funding to support her $60,000 annual budget.
Those familiar with the center say no one else in the country is focusing on the legal rights of disabled parents. Lucas has a blog at www.disabilitypride.com.
“Every state needs someone like Carrie Lucas. The need is so huge,” said Trish Day, who runs a website for parents with disabilities (www.disabledparents.net) from suburban Washington. “Hopefully, her pioneering idea is going to catch on and spread.”
Day said she receives up to 10 e-mails a month from disabled parents seeking legal advice.
